While some harmful conditions in your eyes are not always evident, when it comes to conjunctivitis, you can both see and feel the condition. A common name for conjunctivitis is “pink eye” so you can see it. If your eyes are itchy to the extent that you want to rub them, you will feel it as well. Rubbing your eyes while tempting does no good at all.

It is a nuisance at best and is likely to spread if not treated. In its regular form it is a viral infection but there are cases where the cause is bacteria.

You are likely to experience discharge from your eyes if you are suffering from conjunctivitis while if you manage to get a good night’s sleep, your eyes may be closed by the crust that discharge creates through the night. That crust will break up by applying a damp cloth, perhaps warm but certainly not hot.

“Pink eye” is very contagious and you may be likely to spread it to others for anything up to two weeks. If you touch your eyes, it will be on your hands and then anything or anyone that you touch within that period of up to two weeks.

Pink eye is especially common in children so as a parent you should be alert to the potential issue and have treatment available. Better still, have effective eye drops in the bathroom cabinet that can help you and your family. It is easy to see that it is a condition that can spread quickly in a nursery or classroom and from there into the family home.

While conjunctivitis is not the only diagnosis if your eyes become pink, if you take preventative measures to keep your eyes healthy, you should avoid contracting any problems, and eye drops are an excellent way to do that.
